THE FRIENDLIEST BORDER

WHAT TO DO? Here's your check-list. These are Acuna's landmarks and must-visit places. Take your time and spend an entire weekend enjoying Acuna. You can't squeeze all the fun in one day, that's for sure

HIDALGO STREET
Expressions of Mexican folk art from different regions of the country gather on this corridor. Whether it’s furniture, silver, jewelry or any kind of art craft, you’ll find it on Hidalgo street. A vast selection of crosses, santos figurines, Pueblan Talavera (tile-like pottery) and many more handicrafts are among the attractions of this avenue of the Mexican handicraft. Not in the mood to spend some bucks? well, just go window-shopping. Have fun asking the story behind each piece or just cheking out how the same street later in the evening turns into a giant bar/dance club.

Tired of looking, buying or bargaining? If the answer is yes and you are starving, well, you are in the right district. You'll find a few options to satiate your palate. Don't forget to have a killer margarita along that tasty Northern Mexican dish.

AMISTAD DAM

Visit Amistad Dam(Amistad Lake). It is located on the Mexico and US border, about 15 miles west of Acuna City. Take the Maquiladora Boulevard and just follow the signs to get to the Amistad Lake area. To get a better view of this magnificent dam, take the right ramp as you approach the dam entrance; otherwise take a left at the fork in the road that will lead you to the boat lounge/picnic area. You can drive half way across the dam, park, and enjoy the view and return, if you don’t intend to enter the US. There is a $1.5 fee to enter the lake. No fee at the dam though. Best way to enjoy yourself at the lake is out on the water.

AMISTAD LAKE. Among some fun activities are:

BOATING

Bask in the sun and feel the breeze as you skim across the surface of the 67,000-acre Lake Amistad. Don’t own or have a boat? no worries, plenty of boats to rent, additionally, there are some other things you can do at Lake Amistad. Effective January 2008, boat permits are no longer required for vessels practicing sportfishing in Mexican waters, you stil need the fishing license though. Insurance is always advisable. Adhere to both countries fishing regulations. Boats can be launched at designated beach sites or launch ramps.

SWIMMING

Nothing more refreshing in a hot Coahuilan summer day than swimming in Lake Amistad. Caution remains advisable if you decide to swim. It's recommended to swim in protected or designated beaches. Don't swim alone and remember that alcohol and water activities don't mix.

FISHING

Amistad Lake’s mild weather allows visitor to sport fish almost all year-round. Internationally famous for its largemouth bass, striped bass, white bass, fresh-water bass and trout, the lake is a real sanctuary for fishing enthusiasts. A fishing license is required to fish in both the US and Mexican side.  Texas license are sold at local hardware stores. You can also obtain both Mexican and Texas fishing licenses at Del Rio Fisherman's Hdqtrs. (5245 W. Hwy 90 (830) 774-5670). Local fishing clubs on both sides of the border hold their own tournaments, but there are two in particular that get the attention of the aficionados; the FLW Series Pro on Feb. 7 – Feb. 11 and the Bass Champs Lake Amistad on Feb. 23.( on the US side), in addition to the famous Battle on the Border on April 10-13 in Del Rio, Texas http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_123/bass_2008schedule_07.html . Find designated cleaning stations and do not throw fish remains back into the lake, since it takes longer to decompose and contaminates the water. Fishing without a license is illegal.

BARBEQUE
There is a picnic area with sheltered tables and grills. Picnic area is free. Have a fun “carne asada”, but most importantly, clean up after your event.

LOS NOVILLOS PARK
A few miles outside of Acuna you’ll find this small nature park. Coming from Del Rio/Acuna downtown area, take Highway (2/29), merge onto the lane towards Zaragoza(29) (not Piedras Negras) and follow the highway until you spot the Parque Industrial International. Exit the highway by making a right turn up on this single-lane dirt road across from the Parque Industrial Internacional. Drive for about a mile before you make another turn( T intersection), left this time. This new dirt road will take you to this protected area. Once there, it’s easy to spot birds -like hawks and blue jays-, squirrels and rabbits, among other animals that make of this area their habitat. If you love the outdoors, this park surrounded by oaks and maple-like trees is perfect for activities like camping. A creek runs along the park adding an extra feature to the scenery  . Be aware of the strong thunderstorms that hit the area during the spring-summer season. We advice to drive tall/SUV kinda cars to this park, since the road is a bit bumpy.
